Free painting job checklist (fillable PDF)
A checklist for painting crews that runs from prep to cleanup, inside and out. Use it so every room and wall gets the same prep and the walkthrough goes smoothly.
How to use it
- 1Fill in the header. Enter the customer, address, date and any other details at the top of the checklist.
- 2Work through the items. Check off each item as the crew finishes it. Skip sections that don't apply, like exterior prep on an interior-only job.
- 3Add notes. Record colors and products used, plus anything the customer asked to change or add during the job.
- 4Download or email the PDF. Download the completed checklist as a PDF to print or keep with the job, or email it to yourself to forward to the customer.

Do I need to test for lead paint?
If you disturb painted surfaces in a home or child-occupied facility built before 1978, the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule generally applies. That means certified firms and renovators and lead-safe work practices. Check the EPA's RRP guidance and any state rules.
Should I leave leftover paint with the customer?
Most painters do. Label each can with the room, color name and date so touch-ups later are easy. Ask the customer where they'd like it stored.
How do I handle touch-ups the customer finds later?
Do a walkthrough at the end and note punch items on the checklist. Agree on a time for anything found later, and keep the color record so you can match it.
