What a good garage door maintenance checklist covers

  • Door balance, which tells you whether springs are doing their job
  • Springs and cables, the parts most likely to fail under high tension
  • Rollers, hinges and tracks that cause noise and binding
  • Opener drive, limits and force settings
  • Photo eye and auto-reverse tests on every visit

FAQ

Garage door maintenance checklist questions

Have a question we didn't cover? Book a demo and ask a product specialist.

Should homeowners adjust springs themselves?

No. Springs and cables hold a lot of stored energy and can cause serious injury. Spring and cable work should be done by a trained garage door tech with the right tools.

How often should a garage door be serviced?

Many companies recommend once a year, or more often for heavily used doors. Springs are rated for a certain number of cycles, so usage matters more than age.

What should I do if the safety reversal test fails?

Note it as needing attention and explain the risk to the customer. Adjust or repair it before leaving if you can, and recommend the door not be used with the opener until it's fixed.
