Free vehicle inspection checklist for work trucks (fillable PDF)
A daily pre-trip checklist for techs driving work trucks and vans. Catch problems before they strand a tech or cause an accident.
How to use it
- 1Fill in the header. Enter the customer, address, date and any other details at the top of the checklist.
- 2Work through the items. Walk around the vehicle and mark each item OK, Needs attention or N/A before you leave the yard.
- 3Add notes. Describe any defect and whether it's safe to drive. Report problems to your manager before the first job.
- 4Download or email the PDF. Download the completed checklist as a PDF to print or keep with the job, or email it to yourself to forward to the customer.

Is this the same as a DOT driver vehicle inspection report?
No. Commercial vehicles above certain weight ratings or used in certain ways have federal and state inspection and reporting requirements. If your trucks fall under those rules, use the forms they require. This checklist is for everyday service trucks and vans.
How long does a pre-trip inspection take?
About five to ten minutes once a driver knows the routine. Doing it the same way every day is what makes it quick.
What should a tech do if they find a problem?
Mark it as needing attention, describe it in the notes and tell a manager before driving. Anything affecting brakes, steering, tires or lights should be fixed before the vehicle goes out.
