1,785 square feet of sod including 5% waste, for 1,700 square feet of lawn: 179 rolls or 3.97 pallets (order 4).
How it's calculated
- Area (sq ft) = length × width, or π × (diameter ÷ 2)² for a round area
- Sod to order (sq ft) = total area × (1 + waste %)
- Rolls = sod to order ÷ sq ft per roll, rounded up
- Pallets = sod to order ÷ sq ft per pallet
How to use it
- 1Measure each area. Measure each area as a rectangle, a circle, or enter its square footage. Leave out the house, drives, beds and hardscape.
- 2Set waste. Add a little extra for cuts along edges and curves. Mississippi State Extension suggests about 5% more than you measure.
- 3Match your supplier. Enter the roll size and pallet coverage your sod farm uses. Pallets typically hold 450 to 500 sq ft but vary.
- 4Add prices. Enter your price per pallet, per roll or per square foot, and delivery, to see the material cost.
Worked example
A 40 × 30 ft front lawn and a 25 × 20 ft side yard, with 5% waste, 10 sq ft rolls and 450 sq ft pallets.
- Area = 1,200 + 500 = 1,700 sq ft
- Sod to order = 1,700 × 1.05 = 1,785 sq ft
- Rolls = 1,785 ÷ 10 = 178.5 → 179 rolls
- Pallets = 1,785 ÷ 450 = 3.97 → 4 pallets
Order 4 pallets (1,800 sq ft at 450 per pallet), or 179 rolls if you're buying by the roll.

A pallet of sod may vary in size but typically contains 450 to 500 sq ft. Buy approximately 5% more sod than you think you'll need. The calculator defaults to the low end, 450 sq ft per pallet, and 5% waste.

Each roll is 2 ft by 5 ft and covers 10 sq ft. Their direct-ship pallets are 50 rolls, which shows how pallet counts differ between suppliers.
FAQ
Sod calculator questions
Have a question we didn't cover? Book a demo and ask a product specialist.
How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?
Mississippi State Extension says a pallet typically holds 450 to 500 sq ft, but it varies by farm and by grass. Ask your supplier for their pallet size and enter it; the calculator defaults to 450.
How big is a roll of sod?
Standard small rolls are commonly 2 ft × 5 ft, or 10 sq ft. Some farms cut slabs (often 16 × 24 in.) or big rolls for machine installation, so change the roll size to match.
How much extra sod should I order?
Mississippi State Extension recommends about 5% more than you measure. Add more for lots of curves, narrow strips or beds to cut around.
Should I order by the pallet or the roll?
Pallets are usually cheaper per square foot, but a partial pallet often costs the same as a full one. Compare the rounded-up pallet cost with rolls for the remainder.
