Break-even: 75 jobs a month (74.07 exactly), about 17.1 a week, and $33,333.33 of monthly revenue.

How it's calculated

  • Contribution per job = average job price − variable cost per job
  • Break-even jobs per month = monthly fixed costs ÷ contribution per job
  • Gross margin = contribution ÷ price
  • Break-even revenue = monthly fixed costs ÷ gross margin
  • Jobs per week = jobs per month × 12 ÷ 52

How to use it

  1. 1Add up fixed costs. Total the costs you pay every month regardless of how many jobs you run: rent, office pay, insurance, truck payments, software, your own salary.
  2. 2Enter the average job. Enter your average ticket or job price.
  3. 3Enter variable cost. Enter the average cost that comes with each job (materials, field labor, fuel, card fees), or your gross margin %.
  4. 4Read break-even. The results show the jobs per month and per week, and the monthly revenue, you need to cover fixed costs.

Worked example

$20,000 a month of fixed costs, a $450 average job and $180 of variable cost per job.

  1. Contribution = $450 − $180 = $270 per job (60% gross margin)
  2. Break-even jobs = $20,000 ÷ $270 = 74.07 → 75 jobs a month
  3. Break-even revenue = $20,000 ÷ 0.60 = $33,333.33
  4. Jobs per week = 74.07 × 12 ÷ 52 = 17.1

You need 75 jobs, or about $33,333 of revenue, a month (roughly 17 jobs a week) before you make a profit.

The break-even point is where total cost and total revenue are equal. Break-even point (units) = fixed costs ÷ (sales price per unit − variable cost per unit).

Break-even calculator questions

Have a question we didn't cover? Book a demo and ask a product specialist.

What counts as a fixed cost?

Anything you pay whether or not you run a job this month: rent, office staff, insurance, loan and truck payments, software, marketing retainers and a salary for yourself. Field labor paid by the hour and job materials are variable.

Should field labor be fixed or variable?

If techs are paid only for hours on jobs, treat their labor as variable. If they're salaried or guaranteed 40 hours, put it in fixed costs. Be consistent so nothing is counted twice.

What if I know my gross margin instead of cost per job?

Switch the input to gross margin %. Break-even revenue is fixed costs divided by the margin, and break-even jobs is that revenue divided by your average job price.

Why round jobs up?

You can't run part of a job, and 74.07 jobs leaves you just short. Rounding up shows the first whole number of jobs that covers your costs.

How do I use break-even to plan?

Compare it with what you can actually schedule. If break-even is 75 jobs and your crews can run 80, you're close to the line: raise prices, cut variable cost, or trim fixed costs to widen the gap.
